On a quest for what matters most, Timothy Shriver discovers the joy of being fully alive

As chairman of Special Olympics, Timothy Shriver has dedicated his life to the world's most forgotten minority--people with intellectual disabilities. And in a time when we are all more rudderless than ever, when we've lost our sense of what's ultimately important, when we hunger for stability but get only uncertainty, he has looked to them for guidance. "Fully Alive" chronicles Shriver's discovery of a radically different, and inspiring, way of life. We see straight into the lives of those who seem powerless but who have turned that into a power of their own, and through them learn that we are all totally vulnerable and totally valuable at the same time.
In addition, Shriver offers a new look at his family: his parents, Sargent and Eunice Shriver, and his uncles, John, Robert, and Edward Kennedy, all of whom were resolute advocates for those on the margins. Here, for the first time, Shriver explores the tremendous impact his aunt Rosemary, born with intellectual disabilities, had on his entire family and their legacy.

Review

“Sincere, profound and deeply satisfying.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Bursting with life energy. Profound and inspiring. A must-read.” ―Deepak Chopra

“Timothy Shriver has written a lovely, honest, and inspiring book that draws on his own wisdom, life experiences, and pioneering work as a champion of the intellectually disabled to offer important lessons for all of us.” ―Michael Beschloss, author of Presidential Courage

“Timothy Shriver is not only a gifted writer but a profound intellect and a genuine seeker of the deep truths that make any human life worth living. To read this book is to have your own experience illuminated by an immensely compassionate being, to embrace your own limitations, and to move on with a warmer heart, a more peaceful mind, and a joyfully uplifted spirit.” ―Martha Beck, author of Finding Your Way in a Wild New World

“This is a beautiful book about love, meaning, and the Kennedys. It is about Joseph and Rose's life with Rosemary, their daughter with an intellectual disability, who was a tragedy, yes, but also an amazing and precious person, a blessing to her family, challenging and beloved, a radical teacher of the value of each human life. This is the story of Rosemary Kennedy's role in leading the family to its force as advocates for the disabled all over the world, of her sister Eunice Shriver's founding of Special Olympics, of her nephew Timothy's dedication to this great cause. I was lifted, edified, riveted.” ―Anne Lamott, author of Small Victories

both from the individual’s prospective as well as their loved ones. Tim’s vulnerability
By Peter T
On my flight from DC home to LA last night I read Fully Alive. It is a powerful book that Tim has written. Breaking the “code of silence” about Rosemary opens one’s eyes to the shame that is associated with intellectual disabilities, both from the individual’s prospective as well as their loved ones. Tim’s vulnerability, insight and honest hopefully will remind this world that perception is not always reality. And IF we looked at other peoples similarities versus their difference the world would be a greater place.

At times, I had to take a break from the book because of the rawness of the story, but then 10 minutes later was pulled back because of the excellent writing. I hope others will read this book and find it as meaningful as I did. It has me wanting to join the fight against intolerance

This is one of the best "Kennedy" books I've ever read
By Carol Fisher
This is one of the best "Kennedy" books I've ever read. Like the rest of the world, I greatly admired Tim Shriver's late mother, Eunice. In my eyes, the woman was a saint. Reading this book, I don't know where Eunice Shriver got her qualities from - because she clearly didn't inherit any of her goodness from either of her parents. Joe and Rose Kennedy couldn't accept, or love, their oldest daughter. The reason being - Rosemary wasn't perfect. She was all of age 12 - when her parents sent her far away, in another state, to a boarding school for the feeble minded. It's heartbreaking to read one of the letters Rosemary wrote to her cold mother. It's obvious Rose Kennedy never bothered to write her own daughter. Rosemary may have been "slow" but she was not disabled - at least not until Joe Kennedy made her disabled. Unbelievably, after Joe Kennedy destroyed his beautiful daughter with his forced lobotomy, she became dead to him. He sent her thousands of miles away from the Kennedy's, and never saw her again. Rose Kennedy shunned their daughter as well. The Kennedy parents even lied to their other children about their sister's whereabouts. I was reduced to tears a few times reading Tim's book. I'm glad I read Fully Alive because I've always wondered about Rosemary. I thought this was a beautiful tribute to her. Tim Shriver is an outstanding writer and seems full of kindness and compassion for people. I couldn't put the book down. Kudo's to Tim Shriver.

The Secret and Exceptional Life of Rosemary Kennedy....
By missmickee/bookreview
This beautifully written courageous memoir authored by Timothy Shriver is a tribute to his late aunt Rosemary Kennedy (1918-2005), and thoughtfully raises awareness of the history, stigma, misinformation associated with people having physical and intellectual disabilities, while at the same time celebrating their humanity.

It is good that the term "mental retardation" is no longer used. This was not the case in 1941 when psychosurgery was a popular method to correct defective brain conditions and behavior problems. Joe Kennedy agreed to a prefrontal lobotomy for his oldest daughter Rosemary, who was then 23, and living in a Wisconsin Catholic boarding school for "exceptional" children. Rosemary was academically behind, and lacked the emotional maturity of a typical woman her age. Beautiful as her sisters, she attended social functions with family members on occasion, and never deserved to be labeled as retarded. The angry tantrums and outbursts she had were of great concern to her parents.

It was a fact that the ambitious Joe Kennedy had extremely high standards for his 9 children. They were expected to engage in civic and political pursuits with the goal of the US Presidency for his sons, there were few exceptions. Shriver suggests Rosemary did not fit her fathers ideal, or meet his lofty expectations, and was unable function well in the busy competitive Kennedy family environment. There may have been a possibility of an undiagnosed mental disorder. Shriver writes with understanding and compassion, readers will draw their own conclusions about the treatment of Rosemary by her parents.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver brought Rosemary to her home for family visits, her children knew their aunt well. "Camp Shriver" (1962) opened on her Maryland farm for disabled people. In 1968 Eunice's vision to advocate and provide competitive sporting events for people with physical and intellectual disabilities became the Special Olympics. Currently, Timothy Shriver is the Chairman of the Special Olympics that serve people with disabilities in 40 countries worldwide. Great photos included.
