A resonant, beautiful work of fiction

What happens to a young Indian woman of more than half a century ago, who is sure of her love, and yet must face great loss if she claims this love? This is an evocative, engaging story about a young woman and a young man (who plays the harmonium and composes his own songs), who hold to their ardent love for each other, flying in the face of their families' wishes for them to marry within their own religion. Filled with psychologically deft portraits, and told with a supple omniscient voice, this novel explores two overlapping yet distinct cultures (Hindu and Muslim) in India, before and after the Partition, through its compassionate vision and understanding of the two lovers, Hanif and Rohini. An entrancing story, which offers the wonderful benefit too of folding in intricate history about India and Pakistan, with a masterful lightness of touch.

A starting point, no revolutionary advice

Amazon was giving this book away, and I need a vacation, so I downloaded it. It's a quick read. Although it's about 77 pages you could read every word in about an hour. If you're new to travel hacking, or have never heard of travel hacking, this is as good a starting point as any. I'm not going to say that the information given is common sense, because a lot of people don't know much about anything, but the whole 77 page book basically boils down to one concept: sign up for rewards credit cards.

I suppose one could call that a "travel hack," but I would prefer to think of it as a starting point. Basically everyone that wants to travel for free should begin by picking a destination, a carrier and signing up for their rewards card for the free miles. I was hoping for some advice on racking up miles AFTER getting the initial boost, or some super secret method of meeting the minimum spending requirements, or at least a script for getting out of paying yearly fees. Each of those tips are reduced to one or two paragraphs that basically give you a concept but no real direction.

I would love to see some content added covering topics like miles runs, status bumps, obtaining free upgrades, or maximizing miles from spending. Otherwise this is just a really long tutorial about getting a bunch of credit cards.

Sorry, but this book is too basic to provide much value.

Okay, here's my synopsis: It's fluff. Sorry to say, but it's geared toward absolute beginners, likely people in their early 20's who might have never seen a credit card before. The message of the e-book: "You can sign up for CC's and earn points and fly to anywhere you've ever dreamed!" The author says that he's only been doing this for 2 years. The book is filled with testimonials from other travel hackers that contain their Twitter accounts for you to contact them. Nobody shares anything really worthwhile to help you understand the game. The author himself says that he's never done tried any advanced points generation techniques, but shares some links to some blog entries (one of which was is already dead at the time of the book's release).

The "valuable" minimum spend tips:
- Make your mom an authorized user, ask her to spend like normal on your CC, then give you a check.
- Go to restaurants with friends. Have them pay you back in cash
- If necessary, eat the cost of paying your bills with a credit card. "It's worth it, seriously!"

The book doesn't provide enough useful suggestions about particular cards to look out for. Instead, it's more about setting your goals beforehand and then carefully deciding on cards. The book provides a decent enough job of warning people not to overspend and how to not destroy your credit, but I feel like I could've written the same content, and I've only been doing this for a few months. The book does offer a free Udemy course, but given the material in the book, I probably wouldn't waste my time.

So if you want a book that gives high-fives to a circle of friends and cheers you on for opening credit cards responsibly, buy this book. Otherwise, move along. There are better resources out there.

The author thinks he'll charge $10 for this one day, but in my opinion this book would probably have difficulty selling many copies at $0.99. It's more useful to raise awareness to get people reading particular travel hacking blogs.

Quick read, simple concept, interesting topic!

Who knew? It is actually pretty easy to travel hack. I've heard those rumors and stories from people who have a friend of a friend that finds some conniving way to game the system to their advantage. This friend of a friend always seems to get ridiculously good deals, to meet important people, and get to places where nobody you actually know has ever been. It seems to be some far off and difficult thing that normal people can't do. I was curious, and the book takes less than an hour to read, so I checked this one out. It's pretty well laid out, and *spoiler alert* it gives a step by step method of using credit card travel points that anybody can follow. Overall, I recommend it because of it's simplicity. Individuals can choose to implement it themselves or not depending on how they like to manage their money, but it takes that rumored concept which that one friend of a friend utilized to get all that cool stuff and lays out how it's actually done. Interesting read!

About the Author

Stewart Brown is a poet and critic who teaches African and Caribbean literature at the Centre of West African Studies, University of Birmingham. John Wickham is literary editor of the Nation newspaper (Barbados) and editor of Bim, the Caribbean's longest-established literary journal. One of the most respected figures in Caribbean literature, he also served as a Senator in the Barbados parliament.

A gripping glimpse of the cricket playing Caribbean

This is the book which truly gives the reader a feeling of the "cricket playing Caribbean" a term the editors borrowed from Guyanese-born professor Gordon Rohlehr. Editors Stewart Brown and John Wickham have expanded the borders the Caribbean by including two writers from Suriname, a writer from Panama and Gabriel Garcia Marquez from Colombia. Marquez described himself as a Caribbean writer in a collection of interviews he did for a book entitled The Fragrance of Guava. There are also stories from Cuba, and Puerto Rico. The book begins with a wonderfully symbolic story by Barbadian writer Frank Collymore entitled "Some People Were Meant to Live Alone." In this story, a young man visits his eccentric uncle who may have been a murderer. In the end, the young man becomes a recluse himself. The philosophical question of whether or not we are meant to be alone or in the company of others applies, in many ways, to the individual islands of the Caribbean. The editors say they purposely began their anthology with the story because Collymore is considered by many to be the father of modern Caribbean literature. The book ends with "Nineteen Thirty-Seven", a story by young Haitian writer Edwidge Danticat. This story of a daughter visiting her mother who has been imprisoned wrongfully by the Haitian government because traitors have named her as a practitioner of voodoo, is also symbolic because it shows us how superstition often rules these islands. It also shows us how the literary torch is being passed on to a new generation of writers. In between these two stories are a delightful offering of stories which capture the fine nuances of life in the Caribbean. No other book I've read so far, deals better with the relationship between males and females, a giddy game of posturing and submission which is sometimes tragic and sometimes humourous.

A fine entry into short-form Caribbean Literature

Sadly, this was to be John Wickham's last contribution to West Indian literature, as one of the region's finest writers and editors died in 2000. Indeed, the reader owes a debt of gratitude to Wickham for his discerning eye and vast knowledge of Caribbean writers and writing shine through in this book. But we have this fine gift to cherish in his memory and in honour of the rich and diverse tradition and innovation that is Caribbean writing. As much as are Wickham's own short stories, this anthology is striking in its range, readability and resonance. And as the Caribbean consciousness has transcended cultural and strict geopolitical lines over the last century, the range of offerings in this book has also grown from what it would have delivered had it come out a few decades earlier. This book embraces Haiti, Colombia as much as the Anglophone Caribbean. An essential collection of short story writing in English and as delicious a slice of the West Indian civilization as you're likely to find anywhere.

RON BEN-NATAN is an expert in the field of portals, WebSphere, application security, and database security. He has published several technical books and numerous articles on these topics.

RICHARD GORNITSKY has 23 years of experience in both software development and infrastructure design and is currently a WebSphere Portal Architect with IBM Software Services for Lotus.

TIM HANIS has extensive experience in development and consulting services using WebSphere Portal. He is a Senior Software Engineer at IBM Research Triangle Park Labs.

ORI SASSON is an independent consultant operating out of Singa-pore, specializing in WebSphere Application Server and WebSphere Business Integration. He is the author of several technical books and numerous papers.

Actually, Better Than Average

This book is intended for four audiences: portal developers who will be working with WebSphere Portal Server, portal administrators, portal implementation specialists, and enterprise architects. Since I am a business analyst doing QA on a WebSphere Portal implementation project, I have skipped most of the instructions on how to install, how to access functions, etc. I'll leave that for others to review.

I find the book valuable as a way to understand portals in general and WebSphere Portal in particular. For me, the chapters on LDAP and mobile rendering were the most useful.

But the book is irritating, too. For example, there are lots of definitions of key concepts: very valuable. But they're scattered throughout the text: no glossary. Sometimes one of the authors will refer to the "user," and it's unclear whether he's referring to the end user of the portal or to the content creator: both are WebSphere users. Also, there's a good bit of Web Services in WebSphere, but no real "under the hood" discussion that might help the reader place WPS in clear relation to service-oriented architecture (SOA).

Much of my irritation stems from the editing. (I've worked many years as a technical editor.) At least two of the authors are speakers of English as a foreign language. Nothing wrong with that--if they get good copy editing. But Wiley has outsourced the copy editing. Different editors work on different chapters, they're probably in different countries, and their employer hasn't set down (or just not enforced) editorial guidelines and standards. As a result, we readers aren't getting the quality we deserve.

No Depth.

The contents of this book would better be found in technical documents such as user guides, architecture guides, and admin guides. That some reviewers report that this may be the only place to find some of this information says more about the paucity of good IBM documentation (or perhaps just the poor organisation of the IBM portal support site) than about the quality of the book.

This book is fairly limited to the "To save your data, click 'save'" brand of instructions (I thought Microsoft owned the patent on this technique?). Since many many portal configuration pages are self-explanatory, much of this instruction is wasted. And aside from a brief foray into Portlet development, which is a not-too-bad treatment for a neophyte, there is nothing for a developer.

Finally, the name is misleading. Certainly, there is nothing in this book that could possibly lead to "mastery" of the IBM WebSphere Portal.

Don't waste your money.

Might well be the best WebSphere Portal book out there...

WebSphere Portal (WP) is becoming a major technology, but there's still not a lot of books out there to help you understand and implement it. I had a chance to review Wiley's Mastering IBM WebSphere Portal by Ron Ben-Natan, Richard Gornitsky, Tim Hanis, and Ori Sasson. Having done some work with Portal, I can say I wish I had this book a lot sooner. It would have saved me some headaches.

As you can see from the list of chapters, there's a lot of information that spans many different roles. There's the administration processes, the development processes, security processes, and architecture. Regardless of what part of WP you are dealing with, you'll find something of interest in here. The authors are well-versed and experienced in WP developement and implementation, so it's not a rehash of "here's what the instructions tell you to do". Plenty of illustrations and code samples will help you quickly get to where you need to be.

From a development perspective (since that's my area of expertise), I appreciated the different looks at portlet development. I know that Struts is becoming a de facto standard, but it's hard to find information on how to integrate that into a portlet program. They cover that here. They also cover the differences between the WP API and the JSR 168 standards for development, which is very nice.

Basically, it's one of the most up-to-date books on WP that is currently on the market, and between it and the IBM redbooks you should be able to come up with a successful portal implementation.
