Then, while seated in the "naughty chair....Something clicked." Roger decides to solve his problem by turning his pants into shorts. Of course, that's not the end of the story. This tale will have children laughing, but also sympathizing with the young feline. The simple text teaches a lesson about tantrums and acceptance without being preachy, and the colorful cartoon illustrations depict a modern, stylishly dressed, humanlike cat family. This is a good choice for storytimes. In the second title, a young alligator does all sorts of "big girl" things like getting dressed and using the potty chair, but Janey wants to do "fun stuff" like taking a taxi and going shopping. When her parents tell her she's not yet ready, she decides that she's not big enough for "boring stuff" either, and refuses to clean her room or eat her vegetables. But when she has to consider that she may not be big enough for preschool, she has to make a decision. Children will feel sympathy when they see the wordless spread showing a close-up of Janey with tear-filled eyes. LOVE THIS BOOK!

Crabby Pants by Julie Gassman is one of my favorite stories to read during storytime at the library. Every single time I have read it to a group of preschoolers, as soon as I get to the end they want me to read it again! If I could give it 6 stars, I would!

I love this book. It will be a very appropriate story for my social skills class. Unfortunately I learned a valuable lesson today: Always check the size of a book. The book that arrived was only 7x7, not big enough to use in my classroom.

Let's be honest--kids books had better be good enough to keep the parents entertained and this one definitely did that. It definitely doesn't fit the cliches that most kids books fall into. My daughter likes it a lot, but I love it.

The editor may be enthralled, but I wasn't

This book follows the general form of most antique guides like Miller's and Carter's with lots of pictures and a guide to price. However rather than include an image of each piece roughly 70% of the lamps are only described in words not illustrated. "Candle lantern, tin, upright square form w/the sides composed of vertical tin strips originally enclosing three panes of glass, square tin base and top w/pierced conical cap & large ring handle." No image. Now imagine trying to identify a lamp you have in your hand with ten thousand descriptions and hardy any photos!

On the back cover, it claims to be the only comprehensive price guide covering all types of lighting. Yet inside there is essentially no mention at all of gas lights. There are kero lights, fairy lights and electric lights only. In the all too few pages of actual text and advice, the author occasionally tells us that gas lights were urban and expensive and then doesn't bother to show us any. I find it hard to imagine that the average nineteenth century mid West farmer could afford a Tiffany light either yet there are plenty in the book. Why no gas?

Sorry, but this is one of the worst antique collectors guides I've seen. Save your money and buy Millers. Their lighting section is better than this entire book and they have lots of other stuff too.

I am basically interested in oil lamps and I found that there was very little emphasis on this. If you are interested in other types of lighting, this book might be ok.

Math Start! What can I say about this series? I have so many of them, because I love the way they draw kids in with the story, and have such great connections to the Math we are working on in the classroom. I would recommend this series of books highly! You can purchase based on the skills you are working on or based on the level of your students. Great resource!!

Fantastic math related book.

My son was given several of the titles in this series for Christmas. He and his 3 year old sister really enjoy all of them. In this one, they are trying to gather all the lizards together. They arrive in 5's. Then the narrator loses count and they start over, only this time they count by 10's. Great stuff. Makes skip counting painless.

Wonderful!

This has quickly become one of my son's favorite books. We like to read it together on the floor while using "counting bears" to count along with the story. It is a really fun way to introduce skip counting and other preschool math concepts. Reading the book while counting out the bears helps my kiddo see and understand exactly how and why 5+5=10. Highly recommend!

This is one of the best guides to use SPSS out there. They're not in their 14th edition for nothing. Instructions are detailed enough for good understanding but still brief. Step-by-step instructions for use of SPSS are clear. Perhaps most importantly, how to interpret the statistics is also included. This book has only gotten better with each new edition. Best of all - the authors have a sense of humor, which in my view, is essential in a topic like this. I recommend this book to my master's level and Ph.D. level students. Awesome book...lovelovelove it!

I had a philosophy professor in college who had us read parts of this. He didn't want to make it a chore; he didn't even tell us to read a (whole) chapter. Instead, he would tell us something like, "Read Chapter 1...all of the first page, the first paragraph of the second page and the last three lines on the third page." Then he would give us a true-false test based on only those parts. I think he did it that way because he wanted to introduce us to a different way of thinking and learning, not play "gotcha." He said learning should be a joy. Well, I ended up reading the whole thing and re-reading passages for pleasure. I'd flip pages and find a new, unassigned topic and read it anyway. Years after graduating, I bought the book (he had copies in the reference section of the library because he didn't want to force us to buy books, either). So here are two questions to ponder: 1) Do human babies smile because they see others and imitate, or is it instinct? 2) How do the ethologists know the answer to that question? I'll answer these at the end of my review. For anybody totally new to the subject, ethology is the study of animal behavior. We are animals of course, so some of the book discusses that but other parts address pigeons and crabs and bees and many others. Why do they behave as they do? One aspect that makes them different than other scientists is that they do not set up control and experimental groups to answer it. Rather, they believe that in order to understand an organism properly we have to leave it in its natural environment and observe carefully. Traditional scientists may not like that but the approach leads to some astonishing answers. Google Tinbergen geese imprinting...google von Frisch bees dance...google von Uexkull tick umwelt. Anyway, here are the answers. 1) It's instinct. 2) They know because blind babies start smiling at the same stage as normally sighted babies.

Most memorable College Text

I read this text in college -- and I've reread it since for pleasure. Far from dry, and filled with instructive photos, it is well and precisely written with a subtle undertone of dry humor that is much appreciated but seldom encountered in a college text. This is a terrific overview of this fascinating field that bridges biology and psychology!

The book is a very well written introduction to algebraic topology. It presents the main basic results, provides geometric insights and computational tools. After reading it one really feels confident and one whishes to go further : the book really is what the title says. It is therefore perfectly suited for a first reading.

Cons:
1. The new (re-issued red) edition has many new misprints.
2. The mathematical formulas might look better (they are not typed in TeX);
3. Old-fashioned notations: A-B for A\B, fg for composition f and g and so on.

About the Author

James Corner Field Operations is an award-winning, international landscape architecture, urban and public realm design firm based in New York City. The practice is renowned for strong contemporary design across a variety of project types and scales, from large urban districts and complex post-industrial sites, to small well-crafted, detail design projects. James Corner is recipient of the National Design Award and the Academy of Arts and Letters Architecture Award, among others.

Diller Scofidio + Renfro is an interdisciplinary design studio that integrates architecture, the visual arts and the performing arts. The firm established its identity through theoretical and self-generated projects before coming to international prominence through projects such as Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the recently opened Broad Museum. For their commitment to merging art, architecture, and culture, founding partners Diller and Scofidio were the first in architecture to be recognized with the MacArthur Foundation "genius" award.

Coming from someone who helped write a book on the High Line, this book is my favorite High Line book since Joel Sternfeld's book Walking The High Line. It captures the essence of the whole project from past to present to future.

The High Line is a visually exciting and intriguing view of preservation in NYC. It presents the development of a natural area of NYC, where trains blew soot and men left human castoffs to accumulate. Some professors in architectural schools in the City dreamed their students would enjoy working on this mile and one-half line where rotting rail ties gave food for bugs and birds, and plants, and grasses, and insects and birds came to live and propagate. Joshua David and Robert Hammond felt called to save the High Line for the people of NYC. Their passion and entrepreneurial spirit, and their innocence about the amount of effort needed to bring this about fueled this project and brought many people and organizations together. Most noteworthy, I believe, was the role of the then Commissioner of City Planning, Amanda Burden an advocate for the project. The project took ten years. This book documents all the "ups and downs," the tears and joys, and finally the great sense of accomplishment. Now there was a place on the west side of Manhattan where city dwellers could walk, sit and read, enjoy the flowers and grasses, and quiet found here.
Pictures of its development are engrossing. Everything was photographed from its dying grasses, to its abandoned children’s carts and toys to its polluted soil. Reports of phases of the project are included, as well as summaries of reports, pictures of the stages of clean-ups and planting of grasses, and of workers with their long shadows as the day lengthens. Other countries are planning their own high-lines reusing post-industrial infrastructure.
Amazon has given us an excellent price for this wonder. For those of us who love the City, it is a treasure as is its reality.

This is a beautifully designed book, depicting a beautifully designed park! Fold-out pages enhance the architectural drawings and the photos are fun to look at. Especially at the Amazon price of $45, this is a great buy for anyone interested in architecture, gardens, public spaces, et.
