Binge introduction
GO AHEAD, BINGE.

I’m not saying go out and snort a bunch of cocaine or do anything that’s going to seriously put you or the people around you in danger, obviously.

Binge on the things that bring fulfillment and happiness and satisfaction and make you feel alive. Binge on people who fascinate you and love that wakes you up from monotony. Binge on exploring, both your hometown and the farthest continent. Binge on the time you spend bettering yourself and petting dogs. Binge on picking your grandma’s brain and learning the story of the time she got catfished. Binge on giving, in all senses. Binge on indulging.

We’re told every day from an early age that moderation is key. Count your calories, wait a while before you tell someone you love them, and remember that balance is the path to happiness. While all of those are great in theory, does a lesson taught from someone else’s mistakes resonate just as deeply as the ones you learn yourself? When you binge, you find your own boundaries.

Even if I spend every waking moment attempting to keep my life in balance, I’m going to fuck up. Having already fucked up quite a few times in my life, and having lived to tell the tale, I don’t regret any of it.

I’ve binged plenty of times in my life, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. Regardless, I indulged. This collection is the result.

the one we've all come to know and love through his videos and his podcasts
By Angela C.
As a casual fan of Tyler, I bought this book to support him and to get the inside scope on all the juicy secrets he didn't reveal in his videos. Despite that, I wasn't expecting a lot.

What a refreshing surprise. What I expected to be a book that would slightly elaborate on stories from his videos ended up becoming an engaging, humorous, and emotional rollercoaster. He delves into subjects many people would never touch with a ten foot pole, and he is relentless in his execution. His voice, the one we've all come to know and love through his videos and his podcasts, is embedded within these words in a way that is so natural and strong that you're sucked into the world of "Tyler Oakley" with each sentence you read. Binge gives us the embarrassing relationship stuff, the hilarious of-course-he-would stories, the heartbreaking times, and the simple but resounding life lessons.

Thanks to this, I've set aside my skepticism because as Tyler continuously emphasizes in Binge, in the end, his goal isn't anything else but to be himself. And while this book won't be required reading for AP English Literature anytime soon, it is the epitome of Tyler's presence, and that in itself makes for a fantastic story.

I am so proud of him.
By Amazon Customer
I’ve just read the final sentence of my signed copy of Binge, and put down said book for the first time since picking it up. What better time to write a book review than seconds after finishing the book, with tear-tracks still noticeable on your face and a distinct aching in your heart?

Tyler Oakley is someone who means a lot to me, as his shared video experiences have helped me vastly throughout the (roughly) three years I have been watching his content. Thanks to the wonderful online community that he has helped to create, I have made at least four of my closest friends, three of whom I have met in real life, all thanks to him.

Consequently, it was without question that I ordered Binge. I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting, but I know that it wasn’t this. Never before have I felt so close to him, as though I’ve seen hours of his life on my computer screen -and even had the opportunity to hug him at his London Slumber Party tour stop-, he has truly never shared such intimately personal details of his life with me or any subscriber.

It was a worry of mine that I wouldn’t feel the same connection with Tyler that I usually do whilst reading this book. Thankfully, this was far from the case. Throughout, it felt as if he was speaking to me still, as near as he has always been with videos, closer, even. His unique way of phrasing his sentences, creating inside jokes -perhaps unknowingly- and just talking to us like equals has been built upon and yet stayed true to itself throughout Binge. Not a shred of his distinctive personality has been lost, although it has definitely shone through stronger than ever before.

Now, as always, I am truly proud to call myself one of his people. I love Tyler with all of my heart.

so I thought it would be a good idea to preview the book before he read it ...
By Patti Simmons
I took my 12yo son to see Tyler at his book signing. He's not a HUGE fan, but knows him primarily from some collab videos with other YouTubers. I haven't watched a lot of his stuff myself, so I thought it would be a good idea to preview the book before he read it and I'm glad I did because I was not comfortable having him read the whole thing. We are not a prudish family by any means at all, and I know he could go out there and find all of this info online, but I'm just not quite ready to *personally* hand him a book that teaches him how to use Grindr, have anonymous sex and talks about "getting dick".

That said, I enjoyed the book. I am compromising with my kiddo and letting him read some selected chapters. I feel a little weird doing that because it's not typically my style, but I think there are some valuable lessons and funny stories in the book that he will enjoy. He can read the rest when he cares enough to go snooping for it (I'm not stupid). ;)

The Starfish and the Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations, by Ori Brafman, Rod A. Beckstrom

If you cut off a spider?s head, it dies; if you cut off a starfish?s leg it grows a new one, and that leg can grow into an entirely new starfish. Traditional top-down organizations are like spiders, but now starfish organizations are changing the face of business and the world.

What?s the hidden power behind the success of Wikipedia, craigslist, and Skype? What do eBay and General Electric have in common with the abolitionist and women?s rights movements? What fundamental choice put General Motors and Toyota on vastly different paths?

Ori Brafman and Rod Beckstrom have discovered some unexpected answers, gripping stories, and a tapestry of unlikely connections. The Starfish and the Spider explores what happens when starfish take on spiders and reveals how established companies and institutions, from IBM to Intuit to the U.S. government, are also learning how to incorporate starfish principles to achieve success.

From Publishers Weekly
Brafman and Beckstrom, a pair of Stanford M.B.A.s who have applied their business know-how to promoting peace and economic development through decentralized networking, offer a breezy and entertaining look at how decentralization is changing many organizations. The title metaphor conveys the core concept: though a starfish and a spider have similar shapes, their internal structure is dramatically different—a decapitated spider inevitably dies, while a starfish can regenerate itself from a single amputated leg. In the same way, decentralized organizations, like the Internet, the Apache Indian tribe and Alcoholics Anonymous, are made up of many smaller units capable of operating, growing and multiplying independently of each other, making it very difficult for a rival force to control or defeat them. Despite familiar examples—eBay, Napster and the Toyota assembly line, for example—there are fresh insights, such as the authors' three techniques for combating a decentralized competitor (drive change in your competitors' ideology, force them to become centralized or decentralize yourself). The authors also analyze one of today's most worrisome "starfish" organizations—al-Qaeda—though that group undermines the authors' point that the power of leaderless groups helps to demonstrate the essential goodness and trustworthiness of human beings. --Pradeep Paunrana, CEO, Athi River Mining, Ltd., publicly listed Kenya Company

"It is my pleasure to endorse The Starfish and the Spider by Ori Brafman and Rod Beckstrom. Reading The Starfish and the Spider is like jumping into the minds of two visionaries who can see possibilities for our world that others can not hope to even imagine. But the great thrill of this book is that these two authors are visionaries who have already achieved extraordinary accomplishments in this world - they know how to make visions incarnate. That's why you need to read this book. They see the world the way it can be."
--Caroline Myss, Author of Anatomy of the Spirit and Sacred Contracts

--Robert Leaf, Former Chairman, Burson Marsteller International

"The Starfish and the Spider is an intelligent and compellingly written exposition of the importance of decentralization in our lives, culture and economy. The authors' weaving of neurochemistry with economics sociology and psychology entertained and educated me and will do the same for anyone who wants to learn."

"Starfish represents an important framework for understanding and mastering distributed leadership."
--David Whorton, Managing Director, Tugboat Ventures

"How do you *think* about running your organization in a world where customers openly share their opinions of your business without you controlling the dialog? Is your mentality starfish or spider driven? Read about insightful examples and consequences of paths companies, governments, and social groups have pursued."
--Edward A. Smith, VP of Marketing, Clickshift

"Before I read The Starfish and The Spider, I often felt like I was bobbing alone in a sea of old ideas in how I chose to manifest and guide an organization or project. Now my instincts are affirmed and I go forth with greater insight, confidence and words to articulate my ideas. And of course, I am on the lookout for other starfish."
--Kimberly Carlisle, The Carlisle Enterprise and The Flag Foundation

"This book explains clearly and simply the power of decentralized organization. If decentralized organization sounds like an oxymoron, read on! This is a powerful new organizational model and Brafman and Beckstrom demonstrate how and why it is taking industries by storm."
--Steve Farrell, Former CEO, Enterprise Networking Systems Inc.

--Jim Fruchterman CEO, Benetech

"I'd suggest adding to the list the upcoming The Starfish and the Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations, by Ori Brafman and Rod Beckstrom. It's another great look at how we can often be more effective by subverting hierarchy rather than following it."
--Scott Allen The Ubiquitous Librarian *Blog

"I actually finished it within 48 hours of receiving it, but wanted to re-read and think about it more...it is amazing and continues to give me much to consider - something happens every other day that makes me think about the concepts. Bravo!"

Difficult Subject, Thoughtfully Considered
By Justin McIntosh
The basic premise of "The Starfish and the Spider" is an interesting topic that deserves to be more widely read and understood by government, big business, and everyday people. Mr. Brafman and Mr. Beckstrom did an excellent job researching successful "starfish" or cellular organizations. They tended to focus their attention on the successes while giving only passing mention to select failures. This could be due to a lack of information concerning unsuccessful starfish, but does not change the fact that it looks as if it was a deliberate move to protect their thesis.
The first few chapters of the book tend to read like short, glowing biographies of the founders or "catalyst" who formed, ran, or run these organizations. After the reviews of the "CEOs" a reader might believe that they would have to possess qualities that would render them worthy of sainthood to become a catalyst. This again slants towards the writers' thesis. Once the book moved into the descriptions and rules governing these companies the book becomes much more concise and focused on the formation and growth of such companies.
The book was well written and had good, even if not novel, ideas on how to construct and combats a decentralized organization. There was limited time given to the argument against their thesis which keeps this from being a truly academic work.

'Starfish' explains changing business climate
By Jason Reynolds
What do you do when you've always charged for delivering a service or product and some Web site comes along and offers something much like it for free?

That's been the question plaguing the music recording, news and software companies for some time. It's of great interest to me because I work in the newspaper industry.

This book titled, "The Starfish and the Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations," takes a fascinating look at this phenomenon.

Published in 2006 and written by Ori Brafman and Rod A. Beckstrom, "Starfish" looks at movements/organizations that defy the traditional leadership model of "Who's in charge?" Sometimes, no one is in charge. The Aztecs had Montezuma and a capital city, and were easily wiped out by the Spanish who killed the leader. The Apache had no centralized leader and no capital, and thus were better equipped to fight off attacks by armies from developed nations who looked for traditional targets to strike. But the book's authors say that also describes the recording music industry's attempts to fight off Napster: They effectively killed that one Web site, but their efforts antagonized people and spawned lots of imitators.

The authors write that Craigslist provided an unexpected challenge to the newspaper industry. Why pay for a newspaper classified ad when you can advertise a product for free all over the world? Likewise, why subscribe to a newspaper when you can read it for free online?

Newspapers learned to combine ad sales for print and online editions, as well as partnering with sites like CareerBuilder. After many newspapers dropped their attempts to charge subscriptions for online stories, some organizations are taking a second look at this model again.

"Starfish" provided an eye-opening lesson for me in how my industry has been evolving, and I enjoyed reading this book.

A Pleasant Sight-seeing Tour
By Yasei
This book points to and describes a style of leadership architecture more as by a docent than as an architect. There are deeper logics at play that need understanding if one is to attempt what is being described with any useful effect. However, it is good to understand that there exists a growing body of artifacts in the organizational arena that are the products of non-linear, distributed processes that seem to operate holographically among sapient populations to produce (buzzword alert!) synergistic organizational effects. What used to be called 'the informal organization' - what happens around the watercooler and the lunchroom - is now becoming the dominant modality in all areas of emergent anthropologic phenomena, beyond entrepreneurial commerce. I am finding this book is a useful resource for illuminating these new patterns for people who are on the cusp of transforming their own modes of participation and of adding value.

Review
"The Mark Twain of iron-game storytelling returns to his 'how to' roots with very positive results."

-- Mike Lambert, Editor/Publisher, Powerlifting USA

"[Mr. Kelso has] taken the shrug farther than anyone in the game."

-- Peary Rader, founder of Iron Man magazine

"Who better than Paul Kelso to put a new spin on the shrug -- again?"

-- Randy Strossen, publisher of MILO magazine and author of Super Squats

"Paul Kelso has...finally...updated his original book on shrugs, a revamp so comprehensive that the new version is actually 75% longer! He not only added a lot of material, but rewrote much as well, cutting out some stuff he no longer believes in and adding two new chapters, including one on bench pressing that demands your attention. He has also codified his philosophy into what may evermore be known as 'Kelso's Shrug Laws.' This is not just an exhaustive treatise on a relatively under-utilized body of training movements: it is an effort to really 'think through' the exercise and develop every conceivable practical application for it. After reading a proof of the book, I was struck by the depth of Paul's historical investigation of the exercise (he carefully and consistently notes that he did not 'invent' much when it comes to the shrug...but he sure organized virtually all that has ever been known about it), as well as the way he places this exercise into its proper context within physical culture. Paul has a reverence for strength that underlies all he writes, and he's a terrific yarn teller to boot. If you never do a shrug, you will still be the better for reading this book, because in the telling of the tale of the shrug, you will indirectly come to understanding of the essence of why men and women lift weights in the first place. As I said, the chapter on the shrug and the bench press will merit your consideration...recent devotee Collin Rhodes put 44 lbs. on his already accomplished bench press in just one year, using shrug principles like the 'lateral' arch. Paul Kelso is a great guy and he has written a great book."

-- Powerlifting USA magazine, September 2002

"This unique book should be in every lifter's library."

-- Dr. Ken Leistner

"Paul has done more for my bench than everyone else put together."

-- Collin Rhodes, USAPL world bench press team member

great motion - OK book
By G. Klimanis
I bought this book because of its 2nd edition date of 2002.

While I really appreciate the value of Mr. Kelso's methods,

I'm a bit disappointed in this book. Too many of the pages are dedicated to who wrote about whichever exercises first. So what ?!?

Overall, I see a complete set of shrug exercises.

These are gold. However, I give this book a three star rating because there are so few pictures of the exercises. He mentions many types of grips, but doesn't list them or describe them. If a beginner picks up his book and reads about the "Snatch Grip", he has to go to another book for a definition

.

The desriptions are pretty good, but pretty much every exercise book printed today includes step-by-step pictures

and anatomical diagrams. Most modern exercise charts include

color-coded diagrams of muscles involved in particular exercises.

Anyway, no disrespect intended. I hope Mr. Kelso reads this

review and updates his book so I can buy his 3rd edition.

He should do an Encyclopedia-style rewrite and charge more.

A great addition to anyones workout.
By Ray
The other reviews pretty much say it all. The only thing I would add is: this book is not for beginners. If you have been going to the gym for a while and will continue going, then this is a must have book. It will add and expand on your current workout and give you new ground to explore.

Feminism and the Women's Movement in Malaysia: An Unsung (R)evolution (Routledge Malaysian Studies Series), by Tan Beng Hui, Cecilia Ng

Combining both personal and academic insights into the Malaysian women’s movement, this study provides an in-depth account of the multiple struggles of the Malaysian women’s movement, from securing gender equality in a patriarchal society to achieving unity among members of a multi-ethnic society that are further divided along class and religious lines.

Most historical versions of national struggles have created icons out of male figures. The authors of this book have provided a corrective to this. They detail the importance of the role of the women’s movement, led by numerous unsung personalities in promoting social change in Malaysia. The book centres on a crucial argument: that in the context of an ethnically fragmented post-colonial, authoritarian society, an autonomous woman movement, which began in the early eighties had actually achieved significant political success. However the study observes that by the late 1990s, feminist issues were also readily appropriated by the state and the market, and also suggests that the emergence of ‘market feminism’ poses specific challenges for the future of the Malaysian women’s movement. This thorough and engaging account of feminism and the women’s movement in Malaysia will capture the interest of scholars, policy makers and activists.
