Incredible connection of BMS

As an integrative therapist, I see these connections all the time. The chakra/thought/physical/emotional connections in what we hold and what then holds us. This book is a wonderful read, easy and engrossing with great information about the authors' own experience. Accessible and upbeat, this report interprets the findings of the MacArthur Foundation Study of Successful Aging, a long-term, multidisciplinary research program designed to examine the genetic, biomedical, behavioral and social factors that determine how well we age. Rowe, president of Mount Sinai Hospital, chairs the Foundation's Research Network on Successful Aging, and Kuhn, professor of psychology and public health at the University of Michigan, is a member of that group. They begin by citing the study outcomes to effectively destroy some common negative myths about aging (e.g., that illness accompanies aging or that mental capacity diminishes with age). Next they define successful aging as having three components: low risk of disease and disability; high mental and physical function; and active engagement with life. Emphasizing that lifestyle choices are more important than heredity, they spell out the choices the elderly can make to enhance each component. While focusing on what to do, they also make clear what not do to (e.g., they warn against such popular anti-aging remedies as DHEA and human growth hormone). They then turn to society's role in promoting successful aging. Knowing how to do this is becoming crucial to ever more people as American life expectancy steadily increases to a full century. First dashing six myths about old age (e.g., "To be old is to be sick" and "The elderly don't pull their own weight"), they outline the structure of successful aging, contrast it with "usual aging" (a state of imminent physical breakdown), and argue against the presumption that genetic inheritance is a more powerful determinant of longevity and healthiness than are such variables as nutrition and social interaction. Separate chapters illustrate, with the experience of the study's elderly subjects, that good diet and exercise, maintaining and enhancing mental functions, positive social connections, and productive work are essential to living well while living longer. In conclusion, Rowe and Kahn recommend three large changes in social awareness: reconceptualize the course of life to accommodate increasing longevity, take account of the unpaid labor (e.g., voluntary work, caretaking) that is so much the work of elderly people, and relax the allocations of study, work, and leisure to discrete stages of life. DARN GOOD BOOK

While some may object to these "counterintuitive" findings, this book is in line with the vast majority of recent research in the field of gerontology. The notes at the back of the book give plenty of evidence to back up the claims here, too! In other words, it's accurate -- maybe not obvious, or what people want to hear, but accurate. That's what I wanted, and I think it's what most people can use. The extent to which one's own actions are responsible for how one ages is kind of scary, but also a powerful piece of knowledge. Also, it's great to know how *late* you can start doing a lot of things to improve your later life.
This book is also clear, consise and helpful. It's available in large print too - because just because your eyesight is going doesn't mean it's too late to improve your health by gaining and applying knowledge! If you find that you are aging or know someone who is, read this book!

I stumbled upon the book strictly by accident and ended up paying full list price at Barnes and Noble. After seeing the really great prices on Amazon, I reluctently sat down to read a few chapters to try and get my monies worth. Wow. To say the book was enlightening would be to offer a dis-service to the multi-year McArthur Foundation Study. I picked up a few things from the book that most readers will not and that is basic assumptions that Private Foundations and Private Research gathers far more information about a subject than Government sponsored projects. It occured to me that Government has pretty muched screwed up Social Security as well as providing for long term health care in America. Successful Aging gives an alternative to spending your final years in a Nursing Home. The book is very well thought through, well researched and backed up with countless citations that give credit where credit is due. I found the book an enjoyable read, almost a primer. After reading this book, I ordered out about three hundred dollars worth of additional books on aging. That should tell you something. By the way, I ordered another copy of the book in out of print library edition to add to my collection. Great Book! Great Read! Don't get old without it!

Should be a classic

The research findings reported in Successful Aging have been supported in a new 20-year study by an independent group of researchers. The study by Becca Levy of Yale Univerisity, et al, was reported in 2002. Simply stated, we can decide now to live longer and better. Having a positive attitude about aging is alone responsible for extending life by 7.5 years, and years of activity and involvment, not suffering. This is a very worthwhile read, despite what some stupid old fools have written before.

Ellie Smithson is a highly respectable photographer with a shocking secret. By day, she takes photographs of happy families and loved-up couples about to walk down the aisle, but at night, the talented photographer shakes off the shackles of respectability and takes photographs of a more intimate nature. Nobody – except her old friend Amber – knows about this little sideline. However, things look set to change when Amber is dumped and decides to teach her former lover a lesson. Amber wants Ellie to take an X-rated photo of her having the time of her life with a good-looking hunk who will make her old boyfriend seethe with jealousy. Ellie wouldn’t usually bat an eyelid at such a request, however, she cannot help but feel a little bit awkward when she realises that Amber has roped in Tom Hunt – her accountant – as the unexpected star of this photo shoot!

Ellie doesn’t usually go for boring accountants in three piece suits and sensible haircuts, but for the last couple of months Tom has been haunting her thoughts and disturbing her dreams. Bold, brazen and steamy, Jane O’Reilly deftly mixes humour, pathos and red-hot passion in a searingly hot tale that is not for the faint-hearted! Although the sex is hot and frequent, what I enjoyed most about Indecent…Exposure was that Jane O’Reilly managed to write an erotic short story that had a powerful, compelling and tender romance about two damaged souls finding one another at its heart that will move and enthrall readers.

Despite thoroughly enjoying Indecent…Exposure, my only qualm about this short story was that I felt that Tom and Ellie resolved the issues that were keeping them apart far too quickly and abruptly and would have liked more space to have been devoted to their emotional journey, but due to the restricted word count of short stories, this wasn’t possible.

Readers looking for a fast-paced quick read to brighten up their day, should look no further then Jane O’Reilly’s Indecent stories. With two further installments to go, I can’t wait to see what mischief her characters get up to next!

Shy + Steady = Sexy

Shy Ellie is a regular portrait and wedding photographer by day and erotic photographer by night. Despite her own hesitant and reserved character, she quite enjoys taking naughty pictures of other people at their own request. Or she did, until the day her best friend drags in Ellie’s accountant – the same man Ellie’s had a serious crush on for three years – and asks Ellie to take pictures of them together so Amber can get back at her cheating ex.

Despite this somewhat uncomfortable beginning, this ends up as a hot read between a shy woman with a naughty secret and a deceptively boring accountant with a seriously sexy side. Yet in true O’Reilly style this book is about more than sex and Ellie’s hiding another secret that she considers even more shameful, one she’s certain will make Tom despise her. It adds a definite layer of sadness and sweetness to this story, not to mention a couple of cringe-worthy moments of foolishness and groveling that make it about more than just great sex.

Short, sexy and a little bit sweet, Jane O'Reilly is a master at these quick erotic reads.

Accountants Do It With Interest

Jane O'Reilly--you are my new favorite author! Probably because you could be Charlotte Stein's hornier little sister--yeah, it's that good.

I learn so much from books! Who knew that being a photographer could lead to you taking erotic pics of your bestie blowing some hot stud...who happens to be your ACCOUNTANT?! This, I did not know. Knowledge--it's a good thing. Yeah, this is the accountant you've lusted after for years but couldn't make a move on because he was camouflaged by so much...khaki.

And who knew that accountants had such amazing equipment...and I ain't talking about abacuses...underneath those pleated Dockers? This, I did not know. If I had, I would've done more cruising at H&R Block.

And who knew that accountants could actually feel the same way about a client and sport some tremendous wood...and I ain't talking about a nicely sharpened pencil, though there is something very satisfying about a sharp pencil rather than one that's worn down, because of the way it glides across the paper...and am I really talking about a pencil when there is Hot Accountant Sex waiting around the desk? Apologies--I will save my Staples fantasies for later.

Ennyway, Ellie (the photographer) gets so sidetracked by Tom (the stunt peen) during the photo shoot, that she misses Amber's (the Hoover vacuum) money shot. Who knew that all those penii flying around during a photo shoot could be so distracting?! Ummm, well, this, I kinda did know.

Ellie can't get Tom out of her mind, so of course she must get him into her vachina. A lot. Like, you'd need Tom's 10-key to keep track of all the times they Do It. Thank God he's an accountant and can give her a running a total while he's giving it to her. A lot. Did I mention a lot? Yes, I did, and I thank you, Ms. O'Reilly. You have given me a new respect for the field of accounting.

But Ellie is insecure and tries to sabotage their relationship, because, yes, it IS a relationship, not just sex, though there is sex involved. A lot. Did I mention a lot? But Tom is patient and kind and well-endowed and could do their joint taxes should they ever get married, so it works out in the end.

Ms. O'Reilly packs a lot of heat and angst and love in a short amount of time (this book is novella length), and it's decadently delicious.

The Dark Knight has become so focused and enraged that all the color has drained from his face- in fact the color has drained completely out of this entire book. And in this case it's a good good thing. A classic story seen in a different way.

About the Author
Robert J. Schilling is Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clarkson University. Dr. Schilling's teaching interests include digital signal processing, control systems, robotics, nonlinear systems, computer graphics, and C++ and MATLAB programming. His research interests encompass adaptive signal processing, nonlinear system identification, active noise control, and control of robotic manipulators.

Bio: Sandra L. Harris is Associate Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at Clarkson University. Dr. Harris's teaching interests include process control, thermodynamics, and biochemical engineering. Her research interests center around periodic processing, control of systems having varying dead times, and the generation of input signals for efficient process identification.

Good course material but mediocre book; alternate recommendation

I took a course numerical methods in Mechanical Engineering which covered much of the same material. The class text was "Applied Numerical Methods for Engineers" Using MATLAB and C, by Robert J. Schilling and Sandra L. Harris.

I found the Schilling book very tedious. Also the MATLAB code included with teh book was really awful. Some of the codes contained mistakes so that they would produce the wrong answers. Other codes contained mistakes that would generate errors when you tried to run the programs. Other codes from the Schilling text were just ported over from C; the structure was inefficient and hard to follow- not well suited for MATLAB.

The Schilling book didn't encourage the reader to use many MATLAB functions that were built-in. The text tried to explain everything the hard way and was overall a very mediocre book- All the students and Professor in teh class agreed that Schilling's was a very mediocre book. I found it very confusing.

So I finally bought this one [Numerical Methods in Engineering with Matlab, Kiusalaas] on the recommendation of another student. It helped tremendously so I could do the final project and salvage a 'B' from the course. The codes are simpler to follow and more appropriate to MATLAB. It contains a much better explanation of the eigenvalue problems and systems of linear algebraic equations.

It's more practical if you want ot learn to do instead of [Schilling] putzing around getting stuck in minutiae. Or if you might prefer to do something first and then go back for a try at understanding the minutiae later.

I only wish I had bought this book sooner. The Schilling text ["Applied Numerical Methods for Engineers" Using MATLAB and C, by Robert J. Schilling and Sandra L. Harris] sucked. This book [Numerical Methods in Engineering with Matlab, Kiusalaas] was much better for MATLAB users.

Book is good, but you will still have to have better ...

Book is good, but you will still have to have better than average knowledge to utilize it. Still reads like the extended version of your owners manual so don't expect a ton of pictures and service warnings like the full online (subscription) mechanics references have. Wish it would detail out error codes and what probable causes and secondary cautions should be (with reference pictures).

For general maintenance this is ok. But if you aren't familiar with cars or your particular model, I'd look online for references instead.

It is hard cover and easy to read print

Bought this recently to help replacing down pipes on 335xi BMW, and subsequent repairs to cooling system- Radiator, intercooler, ATF cooler. Also used for oil change info.

Using this manual does not provide you with 100% of the info you need but has alot of technical info such as torque specs and schematics. The pictures are sometimes hard to correlate with actual car but with careful studying are understandable.

It is hard cover and easy to read print. I would buy it again.

One note however, is that it directs you to a website for updates to the info in the manual, but the update website charges a fee for use. I don't think it was this way in the past.

Good manual for the hands-on BMW guy/gal.

Awesome book. Hopefully I don't need to use it too often on my N55 Engine but I'm confident in doing typical maintenance more now that I have this manual.
It does have several print errors in it but they're not major. Such as a section for a N55 repair having pictures of N54 engine like the previous section had.
It's good read starting from the beginning for any BMW aficionado to learn the progress in 3-series engines and how things work in their German cars. I certainly enjoyed reading the technical stuff as an Engineer but also as an aficionado.

Yay! A guide for planners and health professionals working together!

Unlike the 1st edition, this edition involves health professionals into the planning process. This is so vital as we have planned environments that impede rather than promote healthy activities like walking/riding bikes to/from work and daily activities, places for public social gatherings, accessible public transportation, parks,, fresh fruits/veggie outlets, etc. Planners DO influence our health. This handbook is a great step in the right direction!
