umm...what happened here?

Let me start by saying that Elle Casey is an insanely talented writer. I love her voice. I'm sad to give this less than a five star....because oh, how I loved Shine Not Burn. This book just mystified me, honestly. The hero and heroine came off as so immature to me. I had to keep reminding myself that she was almost 30, not 18. Ian is on her 'doo doo list'. For 30 seconds. Then he's just not. For no other reason that I can see except that he's hot and she wants to have fun with him while she's there. We have this huuuuuuuge buildup to them finally really kissing (umm not until 72%. WHAT?!), and it's just glossed over. ***Spoilers in the rest of this review...you've been warned*** And the primary conflict is how Andie has no girlfriends bc there's gossip about her in town. Wait. The conflict isn't even about the main characters? Maybe Andie should hint in the slightest that this bothers her before our heroine is out starting chick fights. And then he's just proposing. At her work. And she talks to every single person around her before addressing him and saying yes? Huh? I was so disappointed in this, maybe bc my expectations were so high after the Amazingness (yes, with a capital A) of Shine Not Burn. Please forgive me Ms. Casey, but I'm very glad this wasn't the first book I read by you...I don't think I would have come back for a second if it had been.

This book seriously made my ribs hurt

I love this author and as soon as I saw that this book was coming out my one click finger got twitchy. I knew I would not be disappointed because I absolutely loved the first, Shine Not Burn. What I wasn't expecting was I would freakin love this book a helluva lot more. I don't think there was one page where I wasn't on the verge of peeing my pants a little because my constant laughing, my ribs were so sore by the end of this book, I am serious I swear I popped a rib out.
The only negative thing I can say about this book is it had to end, I really hope Ms Casey decides she can continue their story, I know I would jump on its buns straight away.

I really enjoyed this book. It was witty and built the characters up quickly. I stayed up very late trying to finish it. What I really liked about the book was there was not that typical break up and heartache and then getting back together. There were some very steamy parts too. Fun, fast,read-

Not worth owning

I bought this e-book thinking I would get good information about the use of the subconscious mind. What I found was a very limited idea of what the subconscious mind can do. I thought the cost to be out-of-line with the information in the book. I feel the cost should be closer to 49 cents. If you are looking for a book that will open you up to the possibilities and use of the mind, look elsewhere. I feel the little green and black by this Dr. Joseph Murphy is trying to steal your money, as there is another Joseph Murphy that is worth reading. Be careful about which one you choose to buy.

He describes for the first time the brutal antics of once-infamous fighters such as the Simpson and Harper brothers and the police killer George "Cloggy" Williams, and explains the eventual demise of the gangs at the turn of the century. Excellent

As an expatriate Brummie and family historian, this book whetted my appetite for more. During the course of reading it, I found the time taken up with the necessities of eating, sleeping and other normal daily chores to be intrusive and each time couldn't wait to return to the book. The author has obviously thoroughly researched his subject - the book is so clearly written - so many of the events, names, etc. made me recall stories told by older family members, particularly concerning the peaky blinders. I found it curious that their hats were described as "bowler" hats, whereas I had always heard that they wore flat caps with razor blades sewn into the peaks. I absolutely recommend the book, not only to Brummies but to anyone interested in the seamier side of the history of many other English cities from the middle of the 19th century to WW1. Various ancestors of mine lived in many of the old streets mentioned, providing me with more atmosphere and a better insight into the lives of all who lived in those streets.

A Valuable Asset for Educators of all Genres

"Tend Your Garden--Nurturing Motivation in Young Adolescent Writers" by Dr. Mary Anna Kruch is marketed as a textbook to aid middle school teachers in the process of teaching writing to their eleven to fourteen year old students. Having spent thirty-five years teaching English, history, and computer applications to students ranging from the seventh to the twelfth grades, I see this as a much larger, more important work.

I think this product has value to not only teachers, but also administrators, parents, tutors, scout leaders, Sunday school teachers--anyone who deals with learners of any age and wants to make a positive difference in their lives. The lessons apply across all genres--math, science, the social sciences, etc., which brings up, what I consider, the most important point of the book. We are not teaching curriculum, we are teaching students.

Each and every one of our students brings a unique entity to the table. Each one has his/her own family, experiences, command of language, and social-mental-learning abilities. Students are not pieces of steel stamped into a particular shape or form at the local manufacturing facility. That's why the Common Core State Standards are irrelevant. "Tend Your Garden" debunks the concept that all students must surpass that magical `line drawn in the sand' as a sign of their achievement. Teachers and schools need to look at the entire child and determine if he/she has made significant growth and improvement over the course of the year.

I particularly liked many of the sample lessons that Dr. Kruch provided throughout the text. I would look at models and immediately my mind would start devising ways they could be used differently. One example is the "Diamond Poem" described on pages 69-70. The poem has two antonyms as the first and last words and then a specified number of lines and words (adjectives and adverbs) describing them. In this case, the antonyms were summer and winter. What if one used two synonyms--laughter, hilarity? What if one were to take the finished poem and write a short descriptive story using each word in succession in its own sentence showing the evolution from summer to winter?

In our school, we had a strong emphasis on "Writing Across the Curriculum." The lessons in "Tend Your Garden" work perfectly for this activity. Visualize a sixth-grade science lab where the teacher boils water in a beaker and stretches a balloon over the opening to catch the escaping gasses until it bursts. Besides the teacher's explanation of the expansion of molecules and creations of steam as the water heated, a writing assignment could include the following: What did you see happening? What went through your mind as you watched the balloon expand? What did you hear during the process? What did you do when the balloon burst? Did you feel or see anything when it did? What did you think when it was over.

The Young Adolescent Motivational Model--YAMM--is presented in a way making the work relevant and needed across the curriculum. There are seven leaves in the garden's flower beginning with Nurturing the Whole Learner in an Inquiry-Rich Environment and ending with Sowing the Seeds of Formative, Authentic Assessment. The model works across the curriculum and can be used and adapted to anyone involved with learning process for anyone at any age.

Thoughtful, caring, and complete - Kruch understands how to teach young writers

As a teacher and teacher educator, Mary Anna Kruch understands how writing works and, more importantly, how to nurture young writers. Her years of experience have led to Tend Your Garden, and her passion and voice fill every page of this book.

As a teacher of writing, I appreciate the way in which she presents the Young Adolescent Motivational Model (YAMM); combined with numerous strategies, the YAMM principles unite her teaching principles to classroom practice.

Kruch thoroughly explains all the components of teaching in a writing workshop -- from building community to offering students choice -- as well as making connections to young adult literature. I also appreciate how she made connections to digital literacy, a position that is a very viable option for students in the writing workshop.

At a time when many professional books about writing seem to be focused on one single or topic such as conferring, mini-lessons, or assessments alone, it is refreshing to see Kruch's comprehensive book that covers all the elements of creating a reading and writing workshop from her caring, thoughtful perspective.

Journalistic curiosity led De Santis, a business reporter and freelance writer, to leave her comfortable white-collar world to work for 18 months on an assembly line at a General Motors van plant in Scarborough, Ontario. This lively and absorbing account of her time at GM is based on the daily journal she kept. De Santis effectively conveys the dominant element of working on the line: relentless, backbreaking labor. Whether she was installing hazardous fiberglass insulation, lights or other parts, the work was always dirty, sweaty and physically draining. She came to understand why workers, sometimes including herself, used their breaks to gulp down a few beers in order to get through the final hours of the shift. De Santis documents some sexual harassment in a plant where 15% of the workers were women, but her overwhelming attitude towards her fellows, both men and women, was respect for their hard work. She made several friends at the plant (including her future husband), and came to despise the condescending attitude of her middle-class friends toward factory workers. She includes a lively description of union politics at the plant; the union, however, could not stop GM from shutting down the factory in 1993. An outstanding read

After graduating from the highly touted Ivy schools with her master's degree in journalism and a BA in English, Solange De Santis toiled in a very successful white collared workplace. Her fascination though, with "the other side", "the blue collar workers" would somehow overpower all sanity and she would seek out employment in the bowls of the workforce. Her dreams of writing a book and her journalistic past are her rational for exploring her curiosities. Hiding her outstanding employment credentials, she lands an assembler job with General Motor's lisping Scarborough Van plant. Solange, nicknamed Sally by her line mates, would now have 18 months in which to "spy" and compile enough material on life within the plant, before being laid-off, along with its 2,700 strong population. This fascinating account of Sally's perseverance, and demanding requirements associated with manual labor, are truly astonishing. Pushing herself beyond physical limits she thought ever existed, she finds herself becoming attached to her co-workers, "a cog in the wheel". A strong bond develops with her work mates through common hardships somewhat like a "boot camp". Her vivid descriptions of the sites and sounds within the plant and the people she works with have clear images and sounds popping into my head. Her circle of friends, "from all woks of life", are so typical of the many groups within the plant. Reading through her book I find Sally dredging up raw nerve endings I thought were buried long ago, for I am one of the 2,700 employee's of the Scarborough Van Plant that devoted the better part of my working life, along with so many others, to that job, as one of Sally's co-workers, on a different shift, with a different circle of friends, only to find myself one day, writing my resume. This book should appeal to anyone looking for a realistic account of life within those "dark window factories", and the typical "labels" these people are saddled with. Bravo Sally, an outstanding read in contrast to your Wall Street journalism.

Rich in detail and anecdote

How many Ivy-League educated journalists would be willing to break their backs and go work on the assembly line to relay this story authentically? Very few! This writer does, and so gets to know the tasks, the workers and the business of making vehicles from the most telling perspective of all. Thoroughly familiar with the corporate point of view from years of business writing, De Santis joins those people whose sweat and toil actually build our world. She gives us the private musings and dreams of hardworking folks who didn't get all the breaks in life that she did, and shows their courage and determination to survive the brutal decisions of an unfeeling corporation. It's sad that management just can't understand the rage of these people whose jobs have been given a death sentence for the sake of higher profits, yet who are expected to give 100% down to the last day. But their voices need to be heard.

Solange De Santis was obviously not looking to "rip the lid off" assembly line work when she began either her experience at GM or her book. This is greatly to her credit. LIFE ON THE LINE does all readers the service of allowing them to make up their own minds. The author's point of view develops in the text at the same pace as her time passed on the line.
Crisp and insightful, this book can stand with the best of writing on the subject. The twofold treat is that those with no "shopfloor" experience may come to value more highly those who toil, and those who work on the line may be able to understand that they can be recognized and appreciated by ones not standing next to them in the heat and din.
