Wonderful resource for children & adults

It includes information about the smallest microscopic worms to the largest animals God ever created, the whales. Our children love to learn about animals and are fascinated by their behaviors, habitats and lives. We often found the kids sitting in the floor reading this book together. The kids learned interesting things about animals like: The giant clam, tridacna, lives in Pacific Ocean and its shell can be over 4 feet in length and it can weigh as much as 725 pounds! The Great Big Book of Everything

My 2 year old daughter loves this book. We bought it for her because she watches Stanley on Disney Channel and wanted a "Great Big Book of Everything" just like Stanley. This book fits the bill. While there is a lot of textual information about the animals, a younger child can enjoy just looking at the pictures, which generally fill up over half of the pages. My daughter is now at the point where she will ask me what animal I like, and then she will find it in the book.

The only criticism I have of the book is that the first couple sections are on simple animals like worms, and that they are given equal time to mammals, which is what younger children are most interested in.

Love this book

Love this book! I wanted it for the orangutan pattern but all the patterns in the book are amazing. I own all 4 of the zoomigurumi books and they are all very good. Directions are clear and I haven't found any missing steps or unclear directions yet like you find in some amigurumi books. Some patterns require more skill but simpler patterns are listed first and they increase in difficulty. If you are comfortable with following written crochet directions and know simple stitches then anything in this book is achievable for you.

This is such a cute assortment of crochet amigurumi patterns. I have the other three books as with this one, the pattern are easy to follow and have nice pictures. A joy to read and even more fun to work up the patterns.

80's edition

I used this book during college (in 1984), and enjoyed it very much. Martindale does a good job connecting or contrasting the many different theorists by their phylosophical view points and schools of thought. The section on classical theorists was better reading than that of contemporary theorists. Contemporary theorists, and their theories, seem to ramble on and on incoherently as if the theorists were either insane or just on a bad acid trip. It's at this point that they appear to try too hard to out do each other with their complex ramblings over minor issues that have already been clearly explained by earlier classical theorists. I also enjoyed the book because it contained photos of the theorists. I was upset that my wife threw this book away which now causes me to buy it at an increased price in 2003.

New texts don't even come close

This book does such an excellent job of examining classical social theory that it puts current texts to shame. Im willing to bet that the breadth of topics covered here is not duplicated in current texts. I guess the only thing really lacking here would be some of the post-modern/post-positivism writers. Im also guessing you could get a copy of this book for much less than the price listed here. The editions (im guessing again) are all very similar. Buy this book!

About the Author
Katie Van Sluys is an assistant professor at DePaul University and teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in literacy education and teacher inquiry. She also works with elementary communities, focusing on what it means to be literate in today's world. Her teaching and research address critical literacy and classroom curriculum, multilingual classroom communities, teacher inquiry, and collaborative teacher education.

Easy and useful read for teachers

For one of my graduate classes (MS in Education), I got to choose one of my textbooks from a long list of books about inquiry or critical literacy in the classroom. Three of us chose What If and Why? and made a little study group. We all agreed that this book is wonderful! It is really refreshing to read. Unlike a lot of textbooks, it is written by a teacher for teachers. It can easily be read (and understood) in a few sittings. There are a lot of examples of invitations and the responses that students created. Some of the invitations include descriptions of how the students and/or teacher came up with the idea for the invitation. There are also ideas and example forms for ways students can reflect on their work and ways teachers can observe and evaluate students.

I cannot wait to try these out in my classroom! However, I have to caution teachers who work in conservative districts or schools with very strict, scripted programs. This book may not be for you! Make sure that critical literacy is valued in your school/district before you spend the money on this book. As long as you have support from those you work with, this book is a great choice for critical literacy.

If you like critical literacy . . . I have also heard fabulous things about L. Heffernan's Critical Literacy and the Writer's Workshop and V. Vasquez's Getting Beyond "I Like the Book". These three books were very popular with students in my graduate reading classes this term.

A book for all ages

I was introduced to this book in a class provided by the company I work for. The class was entitled "Thinking Outside the Box". This class has been attended by executives and managers at large corporations the world over. I'm sure no one in the class expected the last activity to be reading "Hope for the Flowers" aloud. Although this is a "children's" book, it can be appreciated at many levels. I'm sure children will find it very entertaining and moving. However, the specific message relevant to adults is that "following the crowd" in the corporate world can be an empty pursuit, and that we all need to recognize the possibility of reaching for higher goals. The story is engaging, with two charming caterpillars as the main characters, and the beautiful illustrations of them and their exploits are very imaginative. We should all aspire to be butterflies!
