a little dissapointed

I felt that this book kind of missed its mark. Its not a bad book, its quite readable, its just not a great book. I have to say its hard to be critical of anyone that had the motivation to get up and walk the PCT, and also, well done for getting out there and writing about it. I certainly feel that the author had good intentions with the book, its just that it kind of didn't really convey the feeling of walking the PCT for me. There seemed to be a lot of detail about the towns they arrived at, and the large amounts of food they ate, the other trails users that were in the towns etc, but in between, very little about the actual walking of the trail. I realise that the towns, and the people are part of the whole experience, but it kind of took up far to much of the book. There was so little desription of the actual trail, the experiences and feelings of being there. The writing just didn't get up there with a good travel writer and you kind of felt like someone was just sitting and saying "we did this, and then this happened" and never really pulled you into the whole experience. I thought that the last section of walking in the early washington winter was where the author started to get the idea of a travel book, but by then it was a little to late.

Inspirational, page turner, you will want to walk the PCT after this.

I bought this book late last year along with some other PCT books as I hope to hike at least part of it in 2014. I just finished this and my fascination with the PCT has only increased. Keith's writing is so descriptive of his daily travels that I could visualize the environment he was in, I could almost smell the food he cooked, feel the snow hip deep and his hiking buddies are people I want to know, real people facing their daily lives head on. I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys hiking. It is a wonderful read. The Last Englishman (Volume 1)

A great armchair adventure

I am an avid backpacker, and I live not far from the PCT in Washington. Because I can't take time off from making a living to be a thru-hiker, I have been section hiking the Washington PCT for the past few years. When I can't be on the trail, I am an avid reader of "armchair adventures," especially books about the PCT. Over the years I've noticed a pattern in most PCT adventure books: the first 7/8 of the book describes travels through California, the next few chapters describe hiking through Oregon, and then there are a few token pages that basically say "and then it rained in Washington and then I reached Canada. The End" Keith Foskett's book gave more than a glancing blow to the beauty of the Washington PCT, which I greatly appreciated. I also appreciated the fact that he hiked his own hike, and even though he took an alternative route through parts of Oregon due to winter weather conditions, he felt--and I agree with him wholeheartedly--that he hiked the entire PCT. His trail companions came alive on the pages of this book, and his account was both humorous and introspective--without becoming a pity party. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.

A Story From Real Life.

It depends on your taste in books. I do not read a lot of fiction, but I appreciate a good turn of phrase. I bought the book because I liked Carrie Fisher in Star Wars. As with all fiction writers I think there is a good bit of her own life experience there. It is an easy read. Anyone who likes good light writing with a sense of humor about life's tribulations is likely to enjoy this book. I really think that there is considerably more depth to Carrie Fisher than is viewable in her well done characterization of Princess Leia.

I have been waiting and debating whether I wanted to read this, at first I was taken aback by the way Fisher uses interesting ways of describing the story. But now I absolutely love it, her way of writing makes me feel like I'm having a conversation with a person rather then reading. I love the two point of views. A great read!

Easy, Concise Read

Finally a book where the author(s) give the information to you straight up and do not try to impress you with their math skills. The title is correct. The contents of this book are very practical, easy to understand and apply. I'm so impressed with this book that I'm also going to read the other text by Ron Lenk titled "Practical Design of Power Supplies".

Using a wide range of sources from Vietnam, France, and the United States, many of them previously unexploited, he shows how the use of printed matter soared between 1920 and 1945 and in the process transformed Vietnamese public life and shaped the modern Vietnamese consciousness. Print and Power begins with an overview of Vietnam's lively public spheres, bringing debates from Europe and the rest of Asia to Vietnamese studies with nuance and sophistication. It examines the impact of the French colonial state on Vietnamese society as well as Vietnamese and East Asian understandings of public discourse and public space. Popular taste, rather than revolutionary or national ideology, determined to a large extent what was published, with limited intervention by the French authorities. A vibrant but hierarchical public realm of debate existed in Vietnam under authoritarian colonial rule. The work goes on to contest the impact of Confucianism on premodern and modern Vietnam and, based on materials never before used, provides a radically new perspective on the rise of Vietnamese communism from 1929 to 1945. Novel interpretations of the Nghe Tinh soviets (1930-1931), the first major communist uprising in Vietnam, and Vietnamese communist successes in World War II built an audience for their views and made an extremely alien ideology comprehensible to growing numbers of Vietnamese. In what is by far the most thorough examination in English of modern Vietnamese Buddhism and its transformations, McHale argues that, contrary to received wisdom, Buddhism was not in decline during the 1920-1945 period; in fact, more Buddhist texts were produced in Vietnam at that time than at any other in its history. This finding suggests that the heritage of the Vietnamese past played a crucial role in the late colonial period. Print and Power makes a significant contribution to Vietnamese and Asian studies and will be of compelling interest to those in the fields of comparative religion and European colonialism.

Growing up in Oklahoma my only real memory of the Penn Square Bank failure was when they pulled down the red-piggy-bank logo from the top of the building. It was something that was talked about on the national news every evening, but it wasn't well understood just how such a small local bank could cause such a ruckus.
Mr. Singer's book explains what was at the bottom of all of the trouble, how Penn Square fell from grace, and in the process of doing so provides interesting commentary on Oklahoma culture, as well as some history and other facts pertaining to the oil business. The book is very well written and quick paced, providing just enough detail to be considered in depth, while not languishing on unnecessary detail.
It is interesting to remark that the same conditions that caused everyone to say oil at $100 per barrel was a no-brainer are those that caused people to put forth the indestructible nature of internet-retailing. The Okiesmo of wildcats in pursuit of oil bears striking resemblance to the aggressive idiocy of venture capitalists fighting to put money into business plans that ignored common sense.
This book is satisfying on a lot of levels, the depth of information on the figures behind the bankruptcy, the environment that spawned and incented those figures and also the culture, both nationally and locally, which created this collapse. This is a very interesting book, and I highly recommend it.

interesting read on the Penn Square failure

Singer, an Ivy Leaguer from Oklahoma, gives us a pretty good look at how the failure of Penn Square bank nearly took several much larger ones with it back in 1982.
Where Singer's portrayal contrasts with that of others is that he speaks from personal and cultural acquaintance with many of the primary characters. This does not stop him from having a little fun at the expense of what he calls 'Okiesmo', the wildcatting and high-living ethic of the oil and gas industry, but it does mean that he sees his subjects as being (in most cases) basically decent human beings who made bad assumptions and boneheaded business decisions.
The only thing Singer lacks is a deeper exploration of the factors at the upstream banks (Seafirst, Continental, Michigan National, Chase, and more) that allowed Penn Square to balloon out of control. As someone who has seen a few related documents that he can't say much about, I can tell you with certainty that the 'wild and crazy guy' ethic was not limited to Penn Square, and that without the eager participation of larger banks, the whole affair would have been relatively insignificant. Good book for those interested in Oklahoma history, the gas drilling industry or (naturally) the Penn Square failure.

Miller explores the rights of Aboriginal peoples from the 1876 Indian Act to the repeal of Section 67 in the Canadian Human Rights Act in 2011. Also considered is the central role of rights activists-often struggling in the face of widespread hostility-to secure protection for their rights. A highly insightful, original foreword by Michael Ignatieff is based on a very well-received public lecture in response to the chapters written for this volume.

New research in the growing new field of human rights history explores the novelty of, the struggle for, and the limitations of, the new rights regime, and its uneven application across Canadian society.
